It’s certainly been an eventful start to 2025 for the Architecture and Interior Design sector in Sydney. As is often the case, January began on a slower note, but this year felt particularly subdued. Hiring activity remained quiet throughout the early months, and notably, we saw a wave of post-Christmas redundancies.

These cuts were felt most acutely across larger practices—many of which had reached the tail end of major projects and were faced with the difficult decision to downsize teams accordingly. This early contraction has shaped a cautious tone for the first quarter of the year, though signs of activity are beginning to emerge as we move further into Q2.

As we approach the middle of the year, our Market Update for Melbourne is one of mixed messages, with some studios reporting busy times, others a great deal of uncertainty and many sitting right in between.

Whilst there are projects proceeding and recruitment happening, there are very few project sectors showing high growth across the board.

“‘Up and down,’ ‘hot and cold,’ ‘two-paced,’ ‘hard to read’—these phrases have been frequently circulating within our market and among the team here at BT&P Sydney in recent months. The general consensus is that while some of our clients are incredibly busy, others are navigating more challenging times.”

As we rush headlong to the end of 2024, there’s plenty to talk about and lots of questions to be asked about activity in the industry as we progress into 2025.
